Today's "Song of the Day" is the latest of many tribute songs to my favorite city. Until the New York Yankees won the World Series in 2009, another song, 'New York, New York,' had been the theme song for the city that never sleeps. But that year, during the Series, this one started to gain steam and today it is the modern version that speaks for NYC.
Written and performed by rapper/producer Jay Z, the lyrics attest to the pride that many New Yorkers feel about their city and any New Yorker can find something in the song to identify with. The beat is awesome, Alicia Key's vocals on the chorus are inspiring, and the song is just great! Enjoy 'Empire State of Mind':
